Spark’s trip to the Royal Opera House

The Spark girls – those on our development programme for young people aged 13+ – recently took a trip to see the opera ‘La Traviata’ at the Royal Opera House. We have been looking at different ways of communicating emotion, and this was certainly a very dramatic mode! By contrast to our trip to an immersive two-woman play in the basement of a warehouse last term, this was a lavish experience. The girls had a great time and commented on how unexpectedly moved they were, despite the music being unfamiliar and the language incomprehensible  – two of them were even brought to tears by the tragic death of the heroine.

The trip was the first stage in our City Leaders programme – the ‘team-building’ phase. The girls were keen to see backstage at a theatre, and sent off an application to our partners London Youth to bid for funding to do so. We were really grateful to get the go ahead, and had a great time on 28th Jan as a result!
