This summer, I completed a 5-week work experience placement at the Baytree Centre. It has been both insightful and fun, allowing me to see the inner workings of a charity that focuses primarily on women and young girls. As part of this experience, I was able to take part in the Summer Activity trips.
The week began with a ride on the Uber Boat from Vauxhall to Greenwich. The boat trip itself was fun, and the girls enjoyed activities such as bingo and other games. Once we arrived in Greenwich, we visited the famous Cutty Sark, where I learned a lot about the trading and transportation of tea and wool between London and Shanghai.
The following day was a deep dive into the integration of technology and medicine at King’s College Hospital. We were shown robotic creations that are being developed to improve healthcare services and make them more efficient. For example, we saw a robot with a fine needle designed for use in eye surgeries, which aims to reduce human error and improve outcomes. In addition, we were able to observe a live MRI scan. This was the most insightful part for me, as I hope to pursue a career in radiography.
We also visited ClearView Consultancy, where we learned about the consulting process for medications. We took part in a roleplay activity in which we worked in groups to create presentations and pitch a drug for myelofibrosis.
To end the week, we visited Astrid & Miyu. Apart from viewing the MRI scans, this was hands down my favourite trip. The day was very interactive—we began by creating our own beaded jewellery, followed by making mood boards in pairs based on randomly selected words. My word was water. To finish the day, we created faux TikTok posts promoting their latest collection. It was a great mix of creative, hands-on, and thinking activities. On top of that, we each received a goodie bag with a piece of their jewellery inside—so extra points for that!
Overall, this week has been insightful, enjoyable, and filled with opportunities to learn about the different possible career paths we could pursue in the future.
