This week, the Baytree Centre was delighted to welcome 37 business students and faculty members from the College of St Benilde in The Philippines who visited as part of their Autumn Business School programme in connection with St Mary’s University in Twickenham.
A Celebration of Cross-Cultural Learning
The visit offered a wonderful opportunity for cross cultural exchange and shared learning. The group joined us to learn about how Baytree supports personal growth, community engagement and character development and they were able to see first hand how these values come to life across our programmes and services.
One reflection shared by the students particularly resonated with our team. Coming from a developing country, it’s easy to assume that in a place like the UK there’s little need for support. But spending time at Baytree revealed that every community faces its own challenges, and organisations like ours play a vital role in offering opportunity, connection and hope.
According to a recent UK survey, almost half (49%) of young women aged 18-24 report feeling lonely some or all of the time (ITV NEWS), highlighting that support networks are essential in every community. This perspective beautifully captures the heart of Baytree’s mission, recognising that growth and empowerment are universal needs and that communities thrive when people come together to support one another.
Baytree’s Programmes and Impact
Through presentations from our Youth and Women’s services teams, as well as our Operations and Monitoring & Evaluation departments, the students gained an insight into how Baytree empowers women and girls to develop confidence, independence and leadership skills. They learned about our programmes focused on education, employability, mentoring and wellbeing and how these create pathways for women and girls to flourish.
The students also reflected on the global perspective of education and empowerment. Even in developed countries, challenges remain. Globally, around 119 million girls are out of school, including millions at primary, lower and upper secondary levels, (Unicef). These numbers remind us why programmes that nurture skills, confidence and opportunities are so vital.
We’re incredibly grateful to St. Mary’s University for including Baytree in this inspiring learning exchange and to the students for their curiosity, thoughtful questions and warm reflections. Encounters like this remind us that learning goes both ways, and that global collaboration can strengthen the way we work towards a fairer, more connected world.
