For many women and girls, dreaming feels like a luxury they cannot afford. The size of our aspirations is often shaped by the world around us; and when that world is full of barriers, dreams can shrink to fit. The girl who longs to become a doctor but cannot access education. The woman who arrives in a new country, ready to work and contribute, but finds herself held back by language barriers. These are patterns that Baytree Centre is committed to change.
At Baytree, we believe that every woman and girl deserves not only to dream, but to see those dreams become reality. That belief sits at the heart of everything we do. Empowerment, for us, is practical and holistic. It means safe spaces, honest mentorship, hands-on support, and real opportunities for growth.
Take Eva, a mother of three whose quiet determination speaks volumes. When Eva came to Baytree, her focus was squarely on her family. Her eldest son had a dream of studying engineering, and she was resolved to help him reach it. Working alongside her Baytree Coach, Eva explored university options and successfully secured a grant from the Walcot Foundation. Her son is now fully funded to pursue his degree, becoming the first in their family to attend university.
At the same time, Eva was navigating a different kind of challenge for her youngest child, who has significant disabilities and complex care needs. When he started mainstream school, he wasn’t receiving the therapies essential to his development. For Eva, whose English is limited, communicating those concerns to the school was difficult until her Coach stepped in. Eva was able to apply for Disability Living Allowance, working closely with the school’s SENCO, and coordinating with her son’s therapists. Today, he has an Education, Health and Care Plan that truly reflects his needs.
Baytree was created to equip women and girls through one-to-one mentoring, coaching, education and community programmes. This kind of experience is what has helped girls like Hanna who aspired to become either an actress or a lawyer but was struggling with stress and experiencing panic attacks. Through the Sparking Futures employability programme, Hanna (16) has grown into a confident young woman with a clearer vision for her future; ready to tackle new challenges and pursue her dreams.
I enjoyed hearing about the different pathways into jobs and what they really involve. It made me think about how I can use this knowledge in the future.
