At Baytree, we regularly run volunteer internships for anyone looking to gain experience in the charity sector working with women and young people. Internships are generally 3 months long and part-time.

We asked our recent Communications and Fundraising Intern, Alex, to tell us a bit more about her experience at Baytree.

“I first volunteered with Baytree back in 2016 when I moved to London for university. I always wanted to work with young people and I liked Baytree’s mission to empower girls and young women. I helped out with the Science Club throughout my first year and always loved coming to the centre. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly!

“Once I graduated from university I knew I wanted to work in the charity sector but didn’t have a lot of specific experience, so the internship at Baytree seemed a perfect opportunity to develop my skills. I worked in Communications and Fundraising which was incredibly varied – I helped out on the big summer fundraising drive, where we were able to raise £5000, and I helped run Baytree’s social media channels.

“I was able to learn a lot in only 3 months. I saw how a small charity operates with everyone collaborating together! I was also able to take the lead on a few projects that would be really useful for a future career in communications – I quickly got to grips with Canva and Mailchimp and I even edited a video. I came to the internship with very few skills like this, so I’m so grateful to have been allowed to develop them at Baytree.

“I did the internship remotely but I was able to visit the centre once restrictions were lifted. I really enjoyed taking some of the girls on a trip to the museum this summer!

“I am now starting my first full-time job in a charity and my time at Baytree definitely helped me to take my first steps in the charity sector. I would recommend this internship to anyone who wants to gain experience whilst being part of a really welcoming team that does highly rewarding work.”
