A single book holds transformative power and can open doors to opportunities, ideas, and possibilities you never knew existed. A paragraph or even a sentence has the power to spark curiosity, build empathy, and plant the seed of a dream.
Reading, despite its many benefits, is not equally accessible to everyone. For many of the women and girls we support, books and literacy have not always felt within reach. Access to education, migration challenges, language barriers and even the obstacle that poverty presents has limited many women and girls. At Baytree, we understand the power of learning and believe that literacy is not a luxury but a necessity.
Literacy shapes confidence and allow women and girls thrive in the society; allowing them not only to exist, but to participate fully and on their own terms. That shift frompassive observation to agency is something we witness at Baytree time and again, and it often begins with being able to communicate effectively. This has allowed girls like Dinah (17) improve in English language and enrol in college while building confidence, building friendships, integrating into her community.
At Baytree, we are passionate about ensuring that the women and girls we work with encounter books that reflect their lives, honour their backgrounds, and affirm their worth. Because a girl who sees herself as the hero of a story is a girl who can begin to imagine herself as the hero of her own life. For the diverse community of women and girls at Baytree, stories also offer a shared language. They invite conversation, create connection, and gently challenge assumptions on all sides.

Across our programmes from our girls’ mentoring and tutoring to our women’s personal development and ESOL support; we understand that building confidence with language is often the first and most important step.
