That’s the dream. Summer should evoke memories of long, sun-drenched days, ice creams in the park, seaside adventures, time spent with family and friends, and maybe even a trip abroad.
But for many girls that dream is out of reach.
Without the structure of school, summer can become a time of isolation – especially for school-age girls who lose access to peer interaction, routine, and supportive adult guidance.
The Link Between Summer Holidays and Loneliness
What should be a time of fun, joy and connection becomes one of loneliness. For families facing financial hardship, the cost of summer activities, travel, or even daily outings can be prohibitive. And for girls growing up in underserved communities, the absence of safe, enriching spaces can leave them feeling disconnected and unseen.
A UK study found that summer experiences accounted for 65% of the link between low family affluence and poorer mental wellbeing in students. In other words, it’s not just about income – it’s about what children have access to during the holidays. The limited access to enriching summer experiences can lead to feelings of isolation and a decline in mental health when children return to school.
For those living in urban environments, the effects are more keenly felt. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that 19.5% of children in cities reported feeling lonely, compared with just 5.4% in towns and 5.7% in villages/rural areas.
Creating Belonging Through Baytree
At the Baytree Centre, summer is reimagined through the Summer Programme – transforming summers for girls in Lambeth and surrounding boroughs and creating lifelong impact.
Programme Highlights
- Creative and Outdoor Activities: From arts and crafts to outdoor adventures, girls engage in fun, hands-on experiences that build confidence and spark joy.
- Personal Growth Workshops: Led by trained youth workers, these sessions focus on leadership, self-esteem, and resilience.
- Nutritious Meals: Ensuring every girl is nourished and ready to participate fully.
- Residential Experience: A week-long trip that helps girls step out of their comfort zones, try new things, build friendships, and make lifelong memories.
And the impact is clear:
- 92% of participants report improved wellbeing.
- 97% show measurable academic progress.
- 89% develop employability skills.
These numbers reflect real lives changed and behind every statistic is a powerful story.
Real stories: Delivering change this summer
Two weeks, 150 Girls, Countless Memories:
Over just two weeks, Baytree welcomed 150 girls into a whirlwind of enriching activities designed to create lasting memories and new experiences. Activities all young people should have access to – feeding animals, riding ponies, exploring historic buildings in London, lacing up roller skates, making kites, having slumber parties, and boat rides along the Thames.
Behind these experiences is so much more than fun. They are formative, helping girls build confidence, curiosity, and connection. For many, it’s the first time they’ve visited these iconic places or taken part in creative workshops and offers a space to form lasting friendships.
Making a splash
15 girls took part in an unforgettable residential trip with UKSA, a maritime youth charity.
From paddleboarding to team-building exercises, every moment was designed to stretch comfort zones and build resilience.
This wasn’t just about fun – it was about growth. The girls returned with new skills, stronger friendships, and a sense of pride in what they’d achieved. For many, it was their first time away from home or trying something so adventurous.
Describing it in three words, the girls called the week “unique, fun, beautiful.”
Bring the sunshine: You Can Help Create Lasting Summer Memories
Every donation helps turn isolation into connection. And when you compare the cost of everyday summer spending, the impact becomes even more powerful:
- £5: The price of single coffee from a high street café, gone in minutes. But at Baytree, it provides a full day of creativity, learning, and connection for a girl.
- £10: Buys you one portion of fish and chips at the seaside (watch out for the seagulls). But at Baytree, it provides nourishing meals for a girl for an entire week
- £25: The price of one ticket to London Zoo – fun for a few hours. But at Baytree it provides a full week of summer activities for a girl – memories that will last a lifetime.
Together, We Can Make Summer Shine
Summer should be a time of joy, not loneliness. With your support, Baytree can continue to offer girls a safe space to grow, connect, and thrive. Whether it’s through a workshop, a meal, or a week of adventure, your donation helps create lasting change.
Together, we can build community, replace loneliness with belonging, and create memories that last far beyond summer.
